Senator Rochas Okorocha of Imo State has urged Nigerians to marry from different ethnic groups in order to promote peace and harmony in the country.
Inter-tribal marriage is a way of creating cross-cultural understanding among Nigerians, according to the former governor of Imo State, who was the chairman of the National Institute for Cultural Orientation’s (NICO) annual public lecture on Culture and the Management of Diversity in Nigeria.
In Kano state, Okorocha was represented by Professor Sunny Ododo, the General Manager, National Theatre, who claimed that Nigeria’s cultural variety, with over 400 languages and over 200 ethnic groupings, was unquestionably a strength.
The Senate Committee on Culture and Tourism Chairman, Okorocha, emphasized that the Federal Government has been implementing measures to promote intercultural understanding through the National Youth Service Corps.
‘Unless we maximize the opportunities presented by our cultural diversities to strengthen national unity and national integration, our national development agenda will be a mirage,’ said Minister of Information Lai Mohammed, who was represented by Chairman of the National Orientation Agency, Lawal Haruna.
