Senate Spokesperson, Ajibola Says Buhari’s Refusal To Sign Electoral Bill Is Not Surprising

Senate Spokesperson, Ajibola Says Buhari’s Refusal To Sign Electoral Bill Is Not Surprising.

President Muhammadu Buhari’s unwillingness to approve the electoral bill, according to Nigerian Senate spokesperson Ajibola Basiru, is not surprising.

In an interview, Basiru said he would have been shocked if Buhari signed the electoral bill because of various circumstances and unnecessary conflicts, especially inside the ruling party, the All Progressives Congress.

The President noted in a letter to the national assembly that the current situation in the country prevented him from signing the bill. Buhari listed a number of reasons for rejecting the law, including the expensive cost of holding direct primaries, the security challenges of election monitoring, violations of people’ rights, and the marginalization of small political parties.

“I am not disappointed at all. In fact, I would have been surprised if he (Buhari) had given assent given certain circumstances and unnecessary controversies particularly within the ruling party (All Progressives Congress) as to the basis with which direct primaries was inserted.”
